[EXPRESSO] Sacrifice (2025) | Beer On The Sun

After debutting September 2025 at the Telluride Film Festival (to arguably very little acclaim), Sacrifice, the latest film from director Romain Gavrais (Athena) hit theathers here, to also very little fanfare or much in the way of marketing, despite having indeed an all stars cast of recognizable Hollywood actors

The premise sees a film star, Mike Tyler (Chris Evans), try to make a come back by partecipating in a gala full of powerful people, influencers and the likes, takin place in a old cave-temple situated in a Greek island , with the idea of promoting an enviromental positive message, only for a group of pagan cult terrorists (their young leader played by Anna Taylor Joy) that believe a nearby volcano will erupt, causing an extinction level event, and that the only way to advert that and save humanity requires sacrificing three people.

Mike inadvertedly gets imbroiled into their plans, thinking that this is some sort of performance or that he can get away with it, or captivated because he almost shares the same ideals.

Sacrifice is an interesting idea for a ecosatire drama-comedy about the performative lies of the elite that swears this time he won’t rape the Earth for profit, of “greenwashing” and so on, but after a very good first half that has you intrigued in where the plot’s gonna go… the answer is sadly up its own arse, really, just plodding towards its own premise without really doing nothing of substance with it, as it’s all mostly an exercise in stylistical mixture that doesn’t work out, as it lacks actual political commentary, doesn’t actually develops its own themes, and just feel empty.

It’s not exactly “boring” but i won’t lie, this is a movie held together mostly due to its great performances, though not for lack of trying.

[EXPRESSO] Opus (2025) | Modesto, Cult Of The Damned

A horror movie where John Malkovich plays a 90s super popstar coming back after 20 years with a new album and inviting a clique of media personalities (and a young journalist willing to make her mark) for a special preview event on his very Jonestown looking comunity/cult…

It sound promising, but honestly Opus it’s pretty frustrating, for the feature debut of Mark Antony Green shows clear ambition in wanting to tackle the modern theme of the “cult of celebrity”… but it does so quite badly, mostly rehashing stuff already done notably better before, for an uninspired popstar take on The Menu crossed with Midsommar, for example.

I’d complain it’s a thriller devoid of thrills as you know exactly that some culty shit is gonna go down… but it doesn’t really play like a thriller, going for a comedy angle of sorts that doesn’t quite work, as they don’t committ fully to that either. They do deliver a Chuck Norris joke (i kid you not), but mostly you’re left wondering how stupid are these people to not notice they’ve entered “Elton Jonestown”.

Aside from the main protagonist-final girl, whose actress seems unable to gel with the direction… but then again the film isn’t really sure what to do with itself, often contradicting its own set-ups for cheap sholc, the villain plans becoming increasingly stupider and the plot somehow even more senseless, making for a pretentious yet half baked, incredibly stupid mess.

What saves it from being as bad as Blink Twice is John Malkovic go full ham as the villain, basically “Elton Leto”, he commits perfectly that his performance alone makes it kinda worth a watch… but boy it’s a dud, frustratingly so, and maybe – MAYBE – a sign that this type of modern horror-thrillers its running on fumes. Just a bit.

[EXPRESSO] Mindcage (2022) | Grift Of The Seven Lambs

Directed by Mauro Borrelli but otherwise being a through and through american production with a cast of known international hollywood actors, Mindcage it’s there to answer the question of what if we ripped off Silence Of Lambs and Seven, with a way lower budget, worse cast and far woese writing, hoping the supernatural twist would salvage the rest of the movie.

When instead it just a twist that almost makes no sense, because it implies the serial killer is either a X-Men or has received a mystic notepad from the heavens, but let’s actually discuss the plot.

Mindcage is about two detectives, Jake and Mary, seeking the help of an incarcerated serial killer known as The Artist, due to a recent series of murders by the hand of someone that is also killing women, dressing them up like elaborate art exhibits of “angels” and displaying them in various parts of the city, so they can catch this copycat killer.

Again, this is such an obvious rip-off of Silence Of The Lambs, as shameless as it’s stock and predictable… again, until the twist hits, but it’s a supernatural twist, one that feels like a desperate asspull so it can technically feel like it outsmarted your expectations and be more “legally distinct”.

Casting is decent but acting its mostly sloppy, even with John Malkovich as a serial killer being the best performance in the movie… he’s kinda half-assing it too.

It’s just dumb, utterly predictable, direction feels kinda amauterish, production levels are more akin to a TV movie than a theatherical release, and it’s so mundane, so already done better a million of times before that it feels like a waste of time even if it’s barely above 90 minutes, and while it’s not a complete dud.. it’s just barely mediocre.
