[EXPRESSO] Puella Magi Madoka Magica Walpurgisnacht Rising (2026) | ♫ ..in the back of my Dragula ♫

It has literally been 13 years, but after it finally released in Japanese theathers this late August, the fourth Puella Magi Madoka Magica film, Walpurghisnacth Rising, it’s here.

And by “here” i mean i managed to see its special preview screening at this year’s Lucca Comics & Games (one of the biggest Italian anime-nerd-geek conventions), this one somehow i managed to, unlike the one for Godzilla Minus Zero.

I’m gonna try to keep things as spoiler free as possible, despite this being the 4th film in the series.

After the twist ending of Rebellion, the new status quo created by Homura, now “recruiting” random girls into becoming magical girls via the Lizard Phone, is menaced by some unknown new enemy related to the entity of Walpurgisnacht, forcing the magical girls to even build fragile alliances with Homura, as she confronts specters of a past that shouldn’t exist.

Despite this never being touted as the final film in the Madoka Magica series, i can see why one might think so… but it’s so fuckin not, let’s just put it that way.

And frankly i do not mind one bit because it’s good, very damn good, the animation is astounding as ever, the new characters are fun, the narrative engrossing, keeping you intrigued with an increasingly twisted world, lots of action, incredible visuals, revelations and twists, yet you don’t really notice how this is the biggest Madoka Magica movie in runtime too… mostly.

I still say it’s pretty dang good, loved it, the ending and resolution feels quite satisfying in itself, but its also a case of answering many questions only to raise many new ones since there are new concepts, new characters, the lore builds and expands, also to tease a new film, hopefully one we get to see before 2050.

[EXPRESSO] Chainsaw Man The Movie: Reze’s Arc (2025) | I R I S O U T

I guess the thing now for shonen (or shonen-esque, as Chainsaw Man doesn’t quite fit the bill) anime films is to adapt an arc so it can bridge into the following TV seasons, because Demon Slayer did it.

Okay. Why not? I’ll take this over compilation films any day.

In case you aren’t familiar with the series, Chainsaw Man is about Denji, a homeless boy used and betrayed by the yakuza, whom becomes a human-devil hybrid that can sprout chainsaws from his body, after his dog, Pochita (actually the Chainsaw Devil) saves his life by fusing with a dying Denji.

He’s then recruited by Makima, commanding a special unit of Devil Hunters on behalf of the japanese government, which is tasked to kill devils that show up threatening the peace, and also search for the whereabouts of the incredibly powerful yet elusive Gun Devil.

In this specific case, the movie cover’s Reze story arc, with the first season finale seeing Denji confront Katana Man and his allies that were seeking revenge.

The first season did receive some backlash for the animation, but honestly i think MAPPA did a good job with that as well (even if some episodes did suddendly look like ass at times), so expectations were high, even more as it’s a pretty good adaptation of a hit series that didn’t just luck out with its timing, i’ll say that much.

The movie does have better, more consistent quality animation and the decision to adapt this arc pays off in terms of more cinematic flair to the insane action scenes, while also giving the needed time to introduce Reze and his relationship with Denji, it is her story, after all, as much as his.

Pretty good stuff, and the opening theme by Kenshi Yonezu is once again fire.

The Iced Hunter (2018) [REVIEW] | Mozgus Chaser

Welcome to another installment of “no, you never heard of this one before, and i haven’t either”, with The Iced Hunter, an italian horror fantasy action film directed by Davide Cancila and about the titular “iced hunter” (you can tell his namesake was never intended to be translated in english, because it sounds like a fancy non-IBA approved cocktail or a Blooborne collaboration cafè item), a mysterious non-human warrior with fittingly mysterious origins and with memories not of his own, being trailed by the “Domini Lupi” sect, hellbent of getting rid of him at any cost.

Does this feel like a werewolf spiced live action “redo/reinterpretation” of the “Holy Iron Chain Order” arc in Berserk?
